This month's meeting:
April 21st 2009: George Martin will be speaking on the 1st Georgia (Ramsey’s) Regiment. He will give a summary of the activities of the First Georgia from the time the regiment was organized on April 3, 1861, until it was mustered out on March 10, 1862, with emphasis on their actions during the Laurel Hill, Cheat Mountain, and Romney campaigns.
I will be using Power Point to display some of the photos, illustrations and maps I’ll be using in my book. As I mentioned before, speaking to a group like yours is a new experience for me. I’ve been spending my evenings and weekends for the past couple of weeks working on my presentation, so I hope to have a good one for you. The book is still under review by Mercer Press. I was asked to do pretty much of a complete rewrite, which has been quite a challenge. The company I work for downsized a few months back, leaving our office terribly shorthanded and me working quite a few extra hours, with little time to concentrate on writing. I was able to finish the final draft and send it off just a couple of weeks ago. For a bio, I’ve had pretty much a lifelong fascination with the Civil War. I was a member of a Florida reenactment group (7th Florida Infantry, Company F) for eighteen years, participating in most of the 125th anniversary events. I was privileged to participate as an extra in the television movie A Special Friendship, the miniseries North and South, Book Two, and the motion picture Glory. I retired from active reenacting following the 135th anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg. For many years I’ve also been interested in genealogy, and during my research I found that I had an ancestor who served in the Dahlonega Volunteers, which was Company “H” of the First. I was able to compile a tremendous amount of information on the regiment, but found that there was no book-length history of the First, so after being urged by several friends to write something, I first wrote a magazine article on the regiment (which unfortunately was never picked up). This article was later expanded into my book. I work at the Hendersonville, North Carolina office of AAA Carolinas, and live in Hendersonville with my wife Cathy, and our two daughters Amanda and Alicia. Mr. Lee Herron will also talk to the Round Table on the efforts to restore the Powder Works chimney.
